The same evening you're laying in your bed and can't stop thinking about the couple and wonder if you should have offered them your help since the couple did seem quite distressed. You decide to go back tomorrow and see if there is still an opportunity to help them somehow.
[[Replay Story->Start]]You tell the doctor what Sara told you. He treats her and then asks you to interpret to her that there are organizations that can help her with the problems in her marriage. He continues to assure Sara that both he and the interpreter are bound by confidentiality. Sara first becomes very upset and then calms down. She listens to the doctors advice and thanks him for the help.
After the examination you explain to Sara that you felt obligated to tell the doctor the truth because her safety is in danger. She tells you that she feels like you betrayed her trust and leaves the room. You try stop her and convince her to stay but she doesn't listen. You hope to see her again sometime soon to apologize and offer her your help once more.
[[Replay Story->Start]][[Replay Story->Start]]You are a volunteer who just finished an interpreting assignment at a reception centre for refugees. While leaving the building you overhear a man arguing with someone from the medical team. The man's wife sits silently beside him and seems hurt and in pain. The man struggles with communicating his concerns. In between you overhear the couple speaking a language which you speak as well.
[[You approach them and introduce yourself as an interpreter and ask them if you could help them.]]
[[Although you overheard them, you decide not to get involved.]]The man reluctantly accepts your offer and tells you that his wife fell down the stairs and needs medical help. When you try to ask his wife to tell you what exactly happened, he interrupts you and continues to speak for her, telling you that he already told you what happened and that you should translate that to the nurse.
[[You ignore the husband and approach the wife, asking her calmly where she’s hurt.]]
[[You respect the husband's wishes and for now you only talk to him.]]After making her comfortable and gaining her trust, the woman slowly opens up to you. She tells you that her name is Sara and that she loves her husband but ever since they had to flee their country he has been very angry and frustrated. He started to become mentally and physically abusive towards her. She's very scared since she doesn't have any family or friends here besides him.
At that moment the doctor enters the room and the woman tells you frantically to not tell him the truth. The doctor is confused and wants to know what happened.
[[Even though Sara doesn't want to tell the doctor anything, you feel obligated to tell him the truth so that he can treat her properly.]]
[[You respect Sara's wishes and don't mention the abuse and stick to the story that she fell down the stairs.]]However, after the doctor examined her, he becomes suspicious. He asks you if the woman mentioned anything else other than the fall.
[[You carefully explain to the woman that this is a safe space for her and that she can trust you and tell you exactly what happened.]]However, at this point he's already upset and feels offended by your actions. He starts talking nonstop, trying to convince you that his wife is simply clumsy and she just needs somebody to take care of her wounds. Yet, you can't get rid of the feeling that he might be the cause for her bruises.
[[You recognise the seriousness of the situation and tell them you'll be back in a minute. However you go look for your supervisor to help you with the situation.]]The woman seems alarmed by your actions and looks constantly to her husband and doesn't say a word. The husband gets angry and starts to threaten his wife, telling her not to speak to you. You notice that the wife flinches and her behavior and body language seems off. Since you have already worked with victims of domestic violence, you question if this woman is one as well.
[[You don’t want to accuse anybody just yet and try to keep the situation calm and talk to the husband for now.]]You find your supervisor and tell him about your assumptions. He tells you that you cannot do anything unless the woman explicitly tells you that her husband is being abusive. He agrees to go with you and to help you. Once you reach the couple you interpret for the supervisor, telling the husband that his wife needs to do some check ups by herself. Finally the husband agrees and lets his wife go with you. The supervisor stays with the husband while [[you take the woman to a seperate room.]]The doctor examines her and becomes suspicious. He seems very empathetic towards Sara and tells you to interpret that she can talk openly as both he and the interpreter are subject to confidentiality.
[[You turn to Sara and interpret what the doctor said.]]At this point he's already upset and feels threatend by your actions. He starts talking nonstop, trying to convince you that his wife is only clumsy and she just needs somebody to take care of her wounds. However you can't get rid of the feeling that he might be the cause for her bruises.
[[You recognise the seriousness of the situation and tell them you'll be back in a minute. However you go look for your supervisor to help you with the situation.]]Sara recognizes that this might be the only way for her to feel safe and agrees to report the issue.
[[Sara feels safe to tell the doctor the truth. The doctor continues to assure her that there are ways to secure her safety. If she wants, he and the interpreter can help but only if she decides so herself. He also gives her a phone number to an organisation that can help in such cases. Sara is very thankful and visibly relieved. She says that it is good to know that if the situation escalates, she knows what to do. ]]You are now alone with the woman waiting for a doctor to arrive.
[[You carefully explain to the woman that this is a safe space for her and that she can trust you and tell you exactly what happened.]]
[[You don't put too much pressure on her and wait for the doctor to talk about her injuries and how they were caused.]]#Sara
